17 April 2016,
The second weekend of the 2016 MSA Formula race action produced great drama and an excellent pair of second places for Red Bull Junior Luis Leeds. The 16-year-old Australian looked at home around Donington Park right from the start and was second fastest in official qualifying.
Variable weather continued through to the weekend and Luis was frustrated in the wet first race on Saturday when a red flag shortened the race and denied him the chance of a late bid for victory.
Luis said of the weekend;
"I'm really stoked about qualifying and the whole weekend," enthused Leeds. "The weather was quite something, snow was forecast for Saturday morning, it didn't happen but it certainly was cold, it was dry but about 2 degrees.
I've never tried to get tyres up to temperature in those conditions before, it felt like an ice rink and it wasn't until the last run that it came together.
I got there though and was very happy with second."
Sitting on the grid on Saturday afternoon for Race 1 it started to sleet and hail with a lot of rain, the track was still freezing. I was happy with the race though, from about four seconds behind Quinn at one point I made up ground and was starting to push him, looking for a way past. Then the red flag came out, someone had spun and that was the end of the race."
I made a good start in Race 2 from the reverse grid and was up to fourth or fifth but then someone behind made a very over optimistic move and took me out. A shame because there were more good points to be had from that race and up to that point I was second in the championship."
Race 3 was another good one, from third on the grid I got up to second but we are all so close on pace that catching and getting in front is very tough, it was another second place and more good points though."
The Arden guys gave me a perfect car again and that is such a big point. I was pretty happy with my performance, particularly showing that I had the pace in the wet in Race 1. It's only about my third wet race and my first time at Donington so I am very happy with that.
It's a shame we were not to be able to get the win in Race 1 when it was possible, but it's all positive, happy days."
